Back for its second year, Jane’s Walk Colchester promises a full Bank Holiday weekend of local walks, in and around the town, taking place simultaneously with walks in towns and cities around the world, celebrating the legacy of urbanist, activist and writer Jane Jacobs (1916-2006).
Jane Jacobs championed a new community-based approach to urban development, decades before such ideas became commonplace. She believed local residents understand best the neighbourhoods within which they live and she championed citizen involvement in the planning of local urban landscapes. Jacobs called on people to engage directly with the environment around them, to observe and to ask questions of it, and importantly to do so on foot, in conversation with others (“...you’ve got to get out and walk”).
